Fired Up and Ready to Go

Thursday—“Fired Up and Ready to Go:”   “It took a lot of blood, sweat and tears to get to where we are today, but we have just begun. Today we begin in earnest the work of making sure that the world we leave our children is just a little bit better than the one we inhabit today.” -Barack Obama. Moveon.org is hosting a political gathering at Hillel at 7 PM to discuss the outcome of the 2008 Presidential Elections and steps we need to take now that the elections are over.

Hillel’s Jewish Book Group

Hillel’s Jewish book group selection just arrived. We will be reading Michael Chabon’s “The Yiddish Policemen’s Union.” The paperback edition sells for $16, and we’ll be selling it to you at a subsidized price of $12. Please email adina@iowahillel.org about receiving your copy. The book group discussion will take place in approximately two weeks, or however long people think it will take to complete the novel.

Hebrew Crash Course

Last year’s Hillel student body president, Nataly Arber, is leading this semester’s Beginning Hebrew Crash Course at Hillel. The sessions are free and meet weekly on Saturdays at 2PM.
Previously, the Hebrew Crash Course was focused on learning to decipher the Hebrew alphabet. There will be a bit of a reading refresher, but there is going to be an emphasis on Contemporary Conversational Hebrew.

Alternative Spring Break in New Orleans

An amazing opportunity to go to the Gulf Coast with hundreds of other Hillel students from across the country and rebuild some of what was lost in Hurricane Katrina.  If you would like to register for next semester’s Alternative Spring Break in New Orleans, please register at https://www.conference.com/. The ten day trip only costs $150 and covers ten whole days of lodging, transportation, food, speakers, and excitement. Israel Travel Opportunity

The Livnot Journey - MASA

The Livnot Journey is a 5-month program, part of the Jewish Agency’s MASA Israel Experience Programs in Israel. The Livnot programs concentrate on community service, hiking and study, seminars and workshops, and incorporate Livnot’s elements of experiential activities of exploring Judaism and Israel in an open and questioning environment. The program is centered in the Northern Israeli town of Tzfat, with a 2-month kibbutz experience built into the program. The cost of the program is $5400, of which you can apply for a $3000 scholarship from MASA, and perhaps find more funding from local sources.
